UNC Family Medicine sponsors health insurance Enroll

- UNC Family Medicine in Chapel Hill sponsored a Heath Insurance Enroll-a-Thon Saturday to help people navigate the new health insurance marketplace.

A new poll showed the number of people without health insurance had dropped, but some attended the event hoping to sign up for health insurance for the first time.

'I couldn't afford it and I was self employed,' said Nadya Kakhouski.

UNC Charity Care covered Kakhouski's bills when she was diagnosed with cancer, but at the event she was able to sign up for health insurance.

'I am very pleased with the results,' she added.

Others including Drew Edwards are not offered insurance through their employers.

'I have to pay $80 for every visit to the doctor and I've been like three times in the past six weeks,' Edwards said.

Those who attended the Enroll-a-Thon were able to sit down with a counselor and pick out a health plan.

According to the law, most people must have health coverage in 2014 or pay a fee.
