About 53 percent of working-age Ohioans get health insurance through their job or a spouse's employer, according to recently released results of this year's Ohio Health Issues Poll.
The percentage of working-age people who got health insurance from an employer has decreased over time both in Greater Cincinnati and the nation, but 'this remains the most common source of insurance coverage,' said Jennifer Chubinski, director of community research for Interact for Health, the Norwood-based nonprofit that sponsored the survey.
About 64 percent of Ohioans got health insurance from an employer in 2006, which was before the Great Recession.
About 21 percent of working-age adults in Ohio get health insurance from Medicare, Medicaid, veteran's benefits or a combination of the three taxpayer-subsidized programs, the poll found. That percentage was the same in 2012, but it has increased from 13 percent in 2006.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for seniors and some younger people with disabilities. Nearly all adults 65 or older are insured through Medicare, so the survey focused on Ohioans age 18 to 64.
Medicaid is a state-run program that helps pay for health care for the needy, aged, disabled and low-income families with children. The federal government reimburses states for a percentage of the cost.
The Ohio Health Issues Poll found a slight increase among adults who had health insurance from another source, which rose from 10 percent last year to 13 percent in 2014. That included those who bought their own plan. About 10 percent of those who bought their own plan said they were able to do so because of the Affordable Care Act, which took effect this year.
