Colorado's soon-to-open health insurance exchange got a $116 million grant from Obama administration officials Wednesday that should keep the doors open at least to 2015.

The exchange actually sought $125 million to run operations and a major marketing campaign for the health insurance subsidies, but saw about $9 million lopped off from the budget sequestration battles.

When the new federal grant runs out, the exchange must be self-sustaining through a combination of per-policy fees on insurance companies and non-federal grants or donations. Health policies are meant to go on sale through the exchange Oct. 1, effective Jan. 1.

The exchange is the only place individuals can gain federal Obamacare subsidies meant to make health insurance more affordable to millions of Americans.
