Jack White has expressed his disappointment that Kanye West recorded Yeezus without him. The former White Stripe revealed that West and Jay Z both contacted him about making music together, though neither project worked out.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, White recalled that West got in touch while the rapper was making his most recent album, Yeezus. But despite White's enthusiasm, West 'never followed up'. The guitarist was particularly disappointed after Yeezus came out and he had the chance to see one of West's mountainous arena gigs. 'That might have been the greatest show I've seen in my life,' he said. 'It was more punk, more in-your-face than anything I've seen.'
There are fewer details thus far on White's attempted team-up with Jay Z. White allegedly 'worked on several unfinished tracks' with the MC, but 'I'm not sure he liked them', White said. He described one of these in a 2010 chat with GQ: 'I played [Jay Z] something that I've been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it. It's unbelievable-sounding.'
The Third Man Records boss previously collaborated on a 2011 hip-hop release with the Detroit rapper Black Milk, adding guitar, drums and producing two songs. 'The time we spent in Nashville collaborating with Jack White was one of the greatest moments in my music career,' Black Milk wrote at the time.
During a recent interview with NPR, White explained how his new album's title track, Lazaretto, borrows 'the braggadocio of some hip-hop lyrics'. These are lines sung in Spanish, a character 'bragging about himself'. '[The narrator] is actually bragging about real things he's actually accomplished and real things that he actually does, not imaginary things or things he would like to do,' White said. '[But] you can't sing a lyric like 'I work hard.' You can't get away with saying it. So I had to change it to Spanish: 'Yo trabajo duro.''
Lazaretto is out on 10 June.
