Eight million people have bought private coverage through federal and state marketplaces. How many others decided to pass?
There are no firm numbers but the purposely uninsured are out there.
As the New York Times reports, many people who have decided to stay uninsured for now, despite the individual mandate. Some of these people earn too much to qualify for federal subsidies but they still feel like they can't afford it.
The penalty for not having insurance is $95 or 1 percent of modified adjusted gross income.
Those who have done without health insurance and remained in good health for the past few years have been especially resistant to buying policies, the Times reports. Others are motivated by philosophical opposition to the law.
If you or someone you know has chosen to remain uninsured and would be willing to talk about it, please email me at ehayes@bizjournals.com.
