The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), which regulates the sport of boxing in New York State, launched an initiative to enroll uninsured members of the State's boxing community in affordable health care plans through New York State of Health: The Official Health Plan Marketplace. The Commission has enlisted the services of not-for-profit NADAP, which has been contracted by the New York State Department of Health (DOH), to enroll individuals and families in the Health Insurance Marketplace.
'We believe it is vital for boxers to have the ability to see a doctor and maintain good health with a yearly physical,' stated NYSAC's Executive Director, David Berlin. 'This initiative gives boxers and others in the boxing community the opportunity to enroll in health insurance plans through the NY State of Health Marketplace. This is a simple, common sense effort to promote their health and well-being.'
The Commission has partnered with NADAP and DOH to organize a series of open house enrollment sessions. These sessions will provide information on health insurance eligibility requirements, and will assist individuals interested in finding and joining an affordable health care plan that is right for them.
Many professional boxers and other members of the boxing community living in New York State are currently uninsured and therefore unprotected in case of injury or illness. The Commission encourages the boxing community to spread the word and take advantage of these vital services.
'Many of these boxers don't have health insurance,' stated Frida Lee, NADAP's Program Director. 'NADAP is honored to partner with the New York State Athletic Commission to provide fighters with health insurance options and on-the-spot enrollment.'
'We applaud the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) and our navigator partners at NADAP for this innovative and personalized approach to enrolling members of New York's boxing community in quality, affordable health insurance coverage,' said Donna Frescatore, executive director, NY State of Health. 'We're proud to extend the many NY State of Health benefits to the boxing community and provide the opportunity to join the more than one million New Yorkers who have enrolled to date.'
'I would like to thank the New York State Athletic Commission for providing us an easy way to enroll in affordable health insurance through New York's Marketplace,' stated Gabriel Bracero, one of the first enrollees through this initiative and a welterweight title contender from Brooklyn, NY. 'As a boxer, I feel it is important to take care of my health and the peace of mind this brings is important to me and my family.'
