Meet Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding photographer

Share on :

A former shop worker from Liverpool, who was spotted by Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on Instagram, ended up being flown to Italy to shoot their wedding.

Conor McDonnell, 22, says he was asked to travel to Florence for the pair's big day last month.

It was a last-minute request after the world famous photographer, Annie Leibovitz, pulled out the day before.

Conor got a call from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's people 24 hours before the wedding.

He has no idea who had told them to check out his Instagram page.

The photo he took of the celebrity couple became the 'most liked' ever on the app.

He now tours with artists like Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora.

Newsbeat met him at a rooftop bar in London's Southbank with all his bags as he prepared to head out on tour for four weeks.

So, how does a small time photographer end up snapping one of the biggest showbiz weddings ever?

How did your photography kick off?

'There was a concert that I really wanted to go to. A band called The Subways.

'I messaged the band asking as I knew there was no way of getting tickets, back in the MySpace days. They actually got back to me and were like ,'Yeah, I'll put you down for a photo pass.'

'The band liked the photos and after that gig I wanted to do more so I started emailing around bands.

'As I started getting more in my portfolio, people were like, 'Yeah come shoot our band, come and do our band.''

How did it get to the point of taking private planes from Vegas to LA ?

'I don't really know (laughs). I've got a close relationship with people like Ellie Goulding and Rita Ora, being on the road with them quite a lot.

'It's part of their life, so as I'm documenting their life, it automatically becomes part of mine.'

What's it like being on a tour bus?

'I actually like being on a tour bus.'

Does it smell?

'Depends who you're with, you can be with certain bands like some rock bands and they don't look after the bus.

'But the people I work with now, we want it to be our home for the next three weeks so we want it to be nice and our home and not smelly.'

I know contractually you can't talk about the wedding but one photo does stand out doesn't it? The photo that you took is the most liked Instagram photo of all time.

'It's kind of hard to believe, I look at it and look at the amount of people (2.3 million) who liked it and think I took that.

'It's cool seeing all those numbers underneath of the people who've actually liked it.'

How big a role has Instagram played in you getting these gigs?

'It's played a little bit of a role.

'I've got a few jobs here and there off it, I use it as a diary to keep people up to date with what I'm doing.'

There is that day when everyone gets that dream phone call, and for you it was, 'Do you want to come to Florence?'

'It was a bit surreal but good to get the call. I didn't really have time to think about it, it was another job for me and I thought, 'You've just got to focus.''

Were you thinking, 'Is this the job that could change my career?'

'A bit but I didn't really want to think about that.

'I don't like thinking about that, it could all go wrong on the day.

What do you think it was about your photographs that Rita [Ora] and Ellie [Goulding] liked when they first saw them?

'With Rita, I started out with her when her career was starting out, not many people knew about her.

'I saw her in concert supporting Drake and thought, 'She seems cool.' So I got in touch with her management and asked if I could come and take pictures next time she was in Liverpool and she just loved the photos.

'From that she said, 'I want you to be part of my team.'

'I've got all these cool festivals coming up.

'I don't know what she likes about it, I'm just glad she does but I'd like to think she likes my personality as well.'
