W Mag Editor Thinks Paper Totally Got Played by Kim Kardashian

Love it or hate it, Kim Kardashian's Paper cover continues to be a thing we're still talking it - if not for the right reasons. And to be honest, dividing opinion was probably the point. If Kim was universally adored, there's no way it would have gained so much attention.

So Paper editor Mickey Boardman is probably not too concerned about W editor Stefano Tonchi giving his two cents on their latest issue - even though it's pretty clear he thinks it's a tacky mess. W magazine featured naked Kim on the cover of their November 2010 'art issue,' and Tonchi evidently thinks Paper 's is a desperate clutch at their own epic levels of unklothed Kardashian klass.

At W's party with Ferragamo last week, Tonchi told a Page Six reporter that Paper totally got played by Kim K. 'Everybody says, 'Oh my God, look at the cover of Paper magazine with Kim Kardashian,'' he said. 'I'm like, yeah, I think she is using them. We used her.'

'Kim was the perfect person to express the message of the new selfie culture,' Tonchi stated. 'It was Kim Kardashian being used by W, not Kim Kardashian using W. There's a big difference.'

In all seriousness, W's Kim cover was pretty smart. The reality megastar's naked body was accompanied not by a silly hashtag but by a quote from artist Barbara Kruger - 'It's all about me / I mean you / I mean me.' As we originally noted in 2010, 'Kruger is known for her visceral (and obviously visual) commentary on feminism and consumerism. It's worth noting that she often pulled the images for her work from mainstream fashion magazines. How very meta.' But also, boobs. The accompanying spread featured Kim completely naked and covered in silver paint (NSFW obviously.) It was as much a comment about contemporary culture as it was an attempt to #breaktheinternet.

But I don't know if it's true that Paper isn't benefitting from this arrangement. Does 'giving insane mag sales and web traffic' not count as Kim doing something for them?
